Meet in the Upper Lodges car park, which is on the Ditchling Road about half a mile north of the Brighton by-pass, before heading off into the countryside. We gather around a wooden finger-post in the car park.
At 3.00pm we will set off together to walk to our destination, about 10 minutes walk away. The car park can be busy, so allow time for parking or for finding alternative parking nearby (e.g. in the car park off the road to Coldean, another 15 minutes walk away; or in Stanmer Park itself (but that can be busy too), and walk up through the village and take the drive up the hill to the left, to Upper Lodges).
It may be possible to offer lifts – if you would like to offer space in your car or if you would like a lift, please contact us
By bus: 79 leaves the Old Steine (stop U) at 2.15 and stops at Upper Lodges at 2.38. The return bus is at 4.49, arriving at the Old Steine at 5.05. It will go on to Brighton Station if requested. (NOTE: You are advised to check these times on or near the day – unfortunately these times are out of date, but the Brighton & Hove Buses website is unhelpful to the point of not giving me the new timetable)
Other bus options include 78 to Stanmer church (20 mins walk from Upper Lodges), the 25 or 29 to the Lower Lodges gates (30 mins walk – up the drive, past the house, through the village and turn left up the drive to Upper Lodges … or just strike through the Great Wood), or several buses that serve Holingbury Asda, which is an unpleasant and somewhat dangerous road-side walk of about 20 minutes.
